Providing Light In Gross Darkness

The Entitlement Mindset

Mark 10:35-39: “35And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come
unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we
shall desire. 36And he said unto them, What would ye that I should
do for you? 37They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one
on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory. 38But
Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I
drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? 39And
they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of
the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall
ye be baptized:

The entitlement mindset, as we see through this passage, has been around in
the church since its inception. . Look at verses 33-34. We see that Jesus has predicted
his arrest and death. The first thing James and John do is ask something for
themselves.  He we see two disciples,
James and John, asking to sit at throne of God seeking gain for themselves over
others because they were following Christ. These two men had no clue what they
were asking of the father. They were in no position to take on the sins of the
world or to take on the suffering and anguish Jesus was about to take on.
However, they still wanted to be treated as if they were. These disciples had a
history of carnal and humanistic thinking. Think about it for a second. These
12 men were walking with Christ, learning from him, witnessing the miracles he
had done; yet, they still continued to possess fear, doubt, and unbelief. We
are not any different from these disciples. We believe that because we’ve been
attending a specific church that we are entitled to serve in ministry. Or the
ministry should cater to our needs before ministering to the unsaved. Or we
complain about church decisions because we are only concerned with our personal
desires regardless of how they affect the unsaved.

Entitlement is the exact opposite of servanthood. Even Christ came to
minster and be servant to others. (Mark 10:45). Why would we carry ourselves differently
from Christ? Have you served anyone in the last six months? If you can’t answer
this question positively there may be a remnant of entitlement there. Ask God
to reveal areas in your life where they may be entitlement. The world around us
depends on those believers with a servant mindset. God Bless You!

  1. This reminds me of the story Jonah, Jonah was a complete jerk at times he wanted Gods Grace and mercy for himself but was feeling some type of way that the people of Nineveh received mercy and grace from God. He preached a prophesy from God telling the people to repent because there was going to be a downfall of this country. Jonah 3:9-10 says: Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not. See jonah was upset that God told HIM what he was going to do the people but when God flipped the script jonah was mad. Jonah did not feel it was right that they receive GRACE AND MERCY but it was Gods will that HE reverse what HE originally said “only because the people turned from their wicked ways and repented out of a PURE HEART” was the decision reversed. When Jonah went out to sea and was swallowed up by the whale he prayed unto God for grace and mercy and what did God do grant him GRACE AND MERCY and saved him from the whales belly. God knew Jonah was indisagreement with HIS decision but let Jonah know I have the AUTHORITY not you. It does not matter how much you know or how deep rooted you are in Christ there can still be some wicked ways in the ones God calls outwardly. There has to be testings and trials for the ones that are chosen, God needs them to move past their sense of ENTITLEMENT ways so He can continue HIS work in them for the salvation of others. Just because God shows us something about a person, Is that the end all for that person “NO” that person can indeed repent and turn from their wicked way and become a great woman/man of GOD. God is so great that he does not need approval from anyone. We can’t change Gods decsion we have to allow HIS decision to change us…(Think about that)…….This post was Good and ministered to me!!!
